Decolonizing the Hindu Condition

Decolonizing the Hindu Condition
PHS6302 – This course will analyze in detail the psychological and sociological consequences of the British colonial narratives on Hindus, and how the narratives now are being perpetuated by the Hindus themselves. Just as correct diagnosis of any condition is a prerequisite for its cure, for decolonizing the Hindu condition, it is important to first understand the characteristics and consequences of colonization. Then, as a natural corollary, the process of decolonization can begin. Without a thorough understanding of what colonization has wrought upon the Hindu condition, decolonization will remain a mere buzz word or a vacuous term devoid of meaning.

Dharmaśāstra

Dharmaśāstra
$1,500.00Dharmaśāstras are scriptural treatises that contain instruction on Dharma. This course will present sections of the vast Dharma literature, spanning Vedic revelation (śruti), authoritative texts (smṛti) like Manudharmaśāstra, itihāsapurāṇa and the vast commentarial tradition. Hinduism and Dharma are interchangeable terms.
The term “Dharma” accurately describes the scriptural, textual, ethical, and practical concerns of Hinduism, yet the term is nearly impossible to translate, let alone define. In the present context, Dharma deals with injunctions, prohibitions, duties, rights, politics, and proper conduct necessary for the development of the individual, the flourishing of the family and society, and ultimately liberation of the individual from the cycles of birth and death.

Unfortunately, four things are missing in the way mindfulness is taught – a. the true purpose of meditation, b. the foundation of Dharma to live a harmonious life, c. the understanding of Ishvara and d. an enquiry into the meditator that is ever present in all types of meditations. This course will help us return to the Vedic roots of Dhyaanam such that we integrate a suitable, meaningful and sustainable practice of Dhyaanam in our busy lives so that we may live with a greater clarity, cheerfulness and purpose.

Distortions in Indian Historiography

Distortions in Indian Historiography
$400.00HAM4301 – This course traces the distortions in the historiography of medieval and modern India, discernible since the Independence of India. Students will learn about the historical background, key events and trends that remain influential today. In particular, we will take a close look at the phenomenon of “Negationism” or the systematic and mostly willful denial of facts of history. It will also evaluate the scholarly and political impact of the various forms of history manipulation and the prospects for their correction.
The literature on the Left’s willful distortion of communal history in India is limited: S.L. Bhyrappa, Sita Ram Goel, K.S. Lal; Koenraad Elst; Arun Shourie; Meenakshi Jain, D.K Chakrabarti. By contrast, the so-called secularist literature on Hindu communal historiography is plentiful but extremely repetitive: Sarvepalli Gopal, Gyanendra Pandey, AG Noorani and many other academics and journalists, both Indian and foreign.
Since we are specifically interested in how this phenomenon impacts contemporary political discourse and practice, we will concentrate on the former but will also take cognizance of a sample of the latter. We will also remain alert to the possibility that the attempt to diagnose the errors in historiography can themselves introduce new kinds of history distortion.
