Description

Sahitya – IV Course content:

In the Hindu literary tradition, literary compositions inculcate awareness and sensibility of Dharma in the minds of both the commoner and the connoisseur. As with all śāstras in the Indic knowledge traditions, kāvya and kāvya-śāstra, i.e. literary composition and the theory of composition have a well instituted and standardized methodology, structure and system. This is the fourth and final course in a sequence of four courses in Sahitya – Classical Sanskrit literature.

Excellence in prose composition is considered as the gold standard of literary creativity in the Sanskrit literary world. Prose compositions are far less common in comparison to poetry in Sanskrit literature. The mixed medium of campū also has a lesser presence but nevertheless has a distinct identity from the prose and poetry literature, from which it draws its structure, as well as from drama.

This course explores the features of prose and campū literature in Sanskrit and provides an illustration of each of the two types. The course also introduces the dialectics and critical analysis that the theorists of Sanskrit literature engaged in.

In this course students will be able to:

  1. Understand the critical inquiry involved in the construction of theories in the Hindu knowledge traditions.
  2. Observe how the standards of creative writing were evaluated differently in the case of prose and campū compositions.

PHS8302 – In the colonial and postcolonial contexts, there have been many attempts both by Indians and western people to situate the darshanic or, loosely translated, the philosophical worldview of Hinduism as science. “Yoga is scientific” or “Vedas are scientific” is a very common refrain that one hears in contentions and discussions today.

This course critically examines if the darshanic or philosophical underpinnings of Hinduism qualify as science or exceed the definition of science by gaining an in depth understanding of science as understood by its philosophers.

(SAN8106) – Epistemology is an important subject of study across several śāstras in the Indic knowledge tradition, in both Vedic and non-Vedic streams. Each of these knowledge systems systematically develops a science of knowledge i.e. examining what is knowable, through human cognition, what is inferable through methods of reasoning, but not perceivable, and what is unknowable within a system of thought.

While theories of hermeneutics emerge most significantly from the tradition of Pūrva-mīmāṁsā, some important theories pertaining to epistemology are also notable in this system. In discussing what is knowable within a thought system, knowledge itself is often discussed and defined in various Hindu knowledge systems, with great precision.

(SAN7101) – The key features of the Navya-nyāya system of thought as it evolved in time to become the main pramāṇa-śāstra (loosely the discipline of epistemology) in the world of Vedic knowledge systems are essential for the understanding of all other knowledge traditions. The Navya-nyāya system provided the technical language and structures that systematized presentation of thought and dialectics in the world of cognition. All other systems developed theories based on the foundations of the Navya-nyāya model as a reference standard.

(SAN7106) – In the Hindu knowledge traditions, the science of interpreting various Vedic injunctions and aphorisms, and methods of reconciling apparently conflicting systems and statements in the Vedas was developed by the school named Pūrva-mīmāṁsā. The vast body of sūtras authored by Jaimini analyze thread-bare the methods of interpretation of Vedic injunctions and provide insight into the interpretation of these Vedic verses within various contexts of discourse.

This vākya-śāstra, which is a Veda-upāṅga, develops the principles of Vedic hermeneutics which is elucidated for beginners through a text called Arthasaṅgraha.
