(SAN6103) – In the Hindu literary tradition, literary compositions inculcate awareness and sensibility of Dharma in the minds of both the commoner and the connoisseur. As with all śāstras in the Indic knowledge traditions, kāvya and kāvya-śāstra, i.e. literary composition and the theory of composition have a well instituted and standardized methodology, structure and system.

This is the second course in a sequence of four courses in Sāhitya – Classical Sanskrit literature which features an abundance of compositions of metrical verses rather than prose. Consequently, the theories of composition discuss the elements and standards of poetry in great depth and shape the ideas of aesthetics in the Indic literary world.

Prerequisites: 

1) The medium of Instruction is Sanskrit

2) Only currently enrolled Sanskrit master’s certificate students can register for these courses. (MIT-SVS)

3) Admission into Master Program in Sanskrit through MIT-SVS

Course content:

This course elucidates the basics of Sanskrit poetics, focusing on the purposes of literary composition, standards and the nature of the verbal and semantic elements that constitute literary compositions.

In this course students will be able to:

  1. Review a literary work based on the knowledge of theories of poetics and its technicalities to evaluate and better appreciate it
  2. Understand the various potencies of words and how their significance and meaning is the kavi’s masterstroke in literary works
  3. Enjoy reading context-based and non-context-based literature

    HAM8402 – Historicism may be defined minimally as “the belief that an adequate understanding of the nature of anything and an adequate assessment of its value are to be gained by considering it in terms of the place it occupied and the role it played within a process of development.” On this definition, almost every aspect and every discipline in the humanities has succumbed to historicism. Thus, we have the history of ideas, the history of philosophy, art history, etc.

    The study of Hinduism becomes the study of the history of Hinduism: when did it originate, how did it develop from Vedic religion, did it experience a decline, what sociohistorical conditions explain it, and so on. This course interrogates the dominance of historicist concerns in the humanities, with a view to liberating thought from the burden of history.

    Guide by Nietzsche’s diagnosis of modern European culture as suffering from a “surfeit of history,” we shall ask what consequences “the historical sickness” has for the humanities. Can their contemporary crisis in fact be traced back to the crisis of historicism itself?

    (SAN8106) – Epistemology is an important subject of study across several śāstras in the Indic knowledge tradition, in both Vedic and non-Vedic streams. Each of these knowledge systems systematically develops a science of knowledge i.e. examining what is knowable, through human cognition, what is inferable through methods of reasoning, but not perceivable, and what is unknowable within a system of thought.

    While theories of hermeneutics emerge most significantly from the tradition of Pūrva-mīmāṁsā, some important theories pertaining to epistemology are also notable in this system. In discussing what is knowable within a thought system, knowledge itself is often discussed and defined in various Hindu knowledge systems, with great precision.

    CPS7503 – The relevance of Mahatma Gandhi for the contemporary world, characterized by turbulence, is indisputable. Gandhi’s principles of Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satyagraha (love for the truth) stemmed from his religious tradition, and he applied these principles to political action in South Africa and India.

    Gandhian ideas such as frugal economy, Gram Swaraj (grass-roots democracy), Ram Rajya (ideal state), trusteeship, social service, Swadeshi (self-reliance), bread-labor, social and religious harmony, and optimal use of resources will also be explored in the course. The course, while evaluating Gandhian perspective on conflict resolution and peacebuilding, critically examines ideas of Gandhi in academic and policy debates towards the development of rich and multiple perspectives and pathways to address the gap between principles and practice.

    It also proposes Gandhian solutions to contemporary global issues including, but not limited to, inter-state and intra-state conflicts, climate change, religious extremism, rich-poor divide, education, economic development, and women empowerment. The students taking this course will apply a Gandhian perspective on the prevailing discourses on human life and society and appreciate the significance of dialogue among civilizations and cultures.
