Research and Writing Preparatory Seminar

This introductory seminar introduces students to the fundamentals of academic research and writing. A prerequisite for beginning graduate study, it is recommended for all students who wish to express themselves more fluently. This course will break down the writing process. It will teach students how to write simple, cogent papers at first and how to progressively improve their research, précis-writing, and annotation skills so as to sustain more complex and nuanced arguments.

In addition to the basic elements of style, we shall also learn the formal aspects of academic writing: how to correctly quote and cite sources, how to collect and referee previous scholarship, how to edit one’s own work, and how to incorporate existing research into one’s writing.

Research and Writing Preparatory Seminar

Learning Outcome

This course will address four main obstacles students face in writing papers: (1) finding a suitable topic for their paper, (2) developing that topic, (3) ensuring that the topic has a suitable scope for a paper, and (4) ensuring that sufficient literature exists on which to build their thesis. It will also teach them the essential skills for writing a persuasive and well-supported paper: (1) formulating the central inquiry of the paper, (2) developing arguments and supporting them with research, (3) structuring the paper and providing suitable headings and internal connections, (4) creating a bibliography, summarizing existing literature, and situating the paper’s thesis vis-a-vis existing scholarship.

    CPS6505 – Kautilya’s Arthaśāstra, written around 300 BC, is a text on statecraft, on political realism. It deals with various topics including war and diplomacy, how a king can retain his kingdom and become a conqueror, how to make allies and know the enemies, and how to make treaties. It focuses on elements, what can be termed in modern usage diplomacy, such as the doctrine of a silent war, propaganda, secret agents, how to use women as weapons of war, and how to use religion and superstition to advantage.

    According to Kautilya, “power is (possession of) strength” and “strength changes the mind.” More importantly, Kautilya emphasized power to control not only outward behavior but also the thoughts of one’s subjects and enemies. Kautilya is the founder of Mandala Theory of foreign policy, which can be termed as a precursor of the theories of political realism and balance of power. He favored righteous war than greedy and demoniacal wars.

    The course will delve into various elements of this insightful text and juxtapose the main ideas in the text with similar theories and approaches in the modern world. The students will be able to draw parallels between the core ideas embedded in this ancient text with many modern ideas.

    CPS7507 – How does a Vedanta perspective widen our understanding of the current predicaments, and help us explore solutions to them? While exploring solutions to international conflicts, the Vedanta perspective goes beyond surface dimensions of conflicts. For example, Vedanta philsopher Sri Aurobindo argued, like individuals, states have egos– amplified through national habits, prejudices, and idiosyncrasies.

    When applied to international politics, they lead to jingoism, exploitation, and wars, leading to practices like colonialism and imperialism. Colonialism and imperialism were only manifestations of an exploitative substructure. Though colonialism and imperialism belong to the past, the root, the ego, is intact, and its manifestation has acquired new shapes. The Vedanta perspective would also argue that state ego is not static, and it can evolve when state leaders think in terms of human unity and factor that thinking into policymaking.

    The establishment of the United Nations, after the failure of the League of Nations, was hailed a right step in this direction. The UN was established with a promise to ensure dignity and equality to all states. Has this happened? The course explores all these dimensions while mainstreaming the Vedanta perspective and aims to design a Vedanta approach to international politics.

    (SAN8106) – Epistemology is an important subject of study across several śāstras in the Indic knowledge tradition, in both Vedic and non-Vedic streams. Each of these knowledge systems systematically develops a science of knowledge i.e. examining what is knowable, through human cognition, what is inferable through methods of reasoning, but not perceivable, and what is unknowable within a system of thought.

    While theories of hermeneutics emerge most significantly from the tradition of Pūrva-mīmāṁsā, some important theories pertaining to epistemology are also notable in this system. In discussing what is knowable within a thought system, knowledge itself is often discussed and defined in various Hindu knowledge systems, with great precision.

    (SAN6101) – Two distinct systems of classification of world phenomena, i.e. ontologies have emerged from the Vedic thought called Nyaya and Vaisesika. They form the fundamental bedrock for all Indic knowledge traditions.

    Originating from the sutras of Gotama and Kanada, these systems developed sound and systematic logic and reasoning and substantially influenced the trajectory of logic and reason and their use within the world of Hindu knowledge systems. The evolution of the Navya-nyaya system and its eventual merger with the Vaisesika system of thought was a later development.

    HAM8402 – Historicism may be defined minimally as “the belief that an adequate understanding of the nature of anything and an adequate assessment of its value are to be gained by considering it in terms of the place it occupied and the role it played within a process of development.” On this definition, almost every aspect and every discipline in the humanities has succumbed to historicism. Thus, we have the history of ideas, the history of philosophy, art history, etc.

    The study of Hinduism becomes the study of the history of Hinduism: when did it originate, how did it develop from Vedic religion, did it experience a decline, what sociohistorical conditions explain it, and so on. This course interrogates the dominance of historicist concerns in the humanities, with a view to liberating thought from the burden of history.

    Guide by Nietzsche’s diagnosis of modern European culture as suffering from a “surfeit of history,” we shall ask what consequences “the historical sickness” has for the humanities. Can their contemporary crisis in fact be traced back to the crisis of historicism itself?

    Textual Criticism

    This course teaches the fundamentals of textual criticism. Alongside a historical survey of scribal and editorial practices, we shall explore different approaches to editing texts. Of particular interest will be debating over whether to edit the best manuscript or to reconstruct a historical archetype using “Lachmann’s method” (i.e., the genealogical – reconstructive or the common-error method). Throughout, we shall be especially concerned with the correct interpretation of the critical edition—from the working hypothesis (Contini) to eclecticism (Barbi) to scientific text (Leonardi).
