Description

Applied Vedic Science – Advanced Ayurveda Course Content:

The wellbeing of the individual and society in the Vedic vision of the universe included both material and spiritual wellbeing. The Vedic vision did not exclude any group or peoples, unlike most ideologies which seek advantage for one group of people at the expense of others, but sought to provide such knowledge that could protect, enhance, empower and enrich life for all peoples who pursued these knowledge systems.

The theory and practice of Ayurveda are one of the vital applied sciences derived from the Vedic vision. This course is the first of a two-part course series that provides the familiarity of the knowledge system of Ayurveda, by exploring its background and key contributors to the different schools of Ayurveda.

This course provides an in-depth appreciation of the science and practice of Ayurveda, through a study of one of the core texts pertaining to the portions suggesting regimen for individuals corresponding to the different seasons. In this course students will be able to:

(SAN6101) – Two distinct systems of classification of world phenomena, i.e. ontologies have emerged from the Vedic thought called Nyaya and Vaisesika. They form the fundamental bedrock for all Indic knowledge traditions.

Originating from the sutras of Gotama and Kanada, these systems developed sound and systematic logic and reasoning and substantially influenced the trajectory of logic and reason and their use within the world of Hindu knowledge systems. The evolution of the Navya-nyaya system and its eventual merger with the Vaisesika system of thought was a later development.

HAM8402 – Historicism may be defined minimally as “the belief that an adequate understanding of the nature of anything and an adequate assessment of its value are to be gained by considering it in terms of the place it occupied and the role it played within a process of development.” On this definition, almost every aspect and every discipline in the humanities has succumbed to historicism. Thus, we have the history of ideas, the history of philosophy, art history, etc.

The study of Hinduism becomes the study of the history of Hinduism: when did it originate, how did it develop from Vedic religion, did it experience a decline, what sociohistorical conditions explain it, and so on. This course interrogates the dominance of historicist concerns in the humanities, with a view to liberating thought from the burden of history.

Guide by Nietzsche’s diagnosis of modern European culture as suffering from a “surfeit of history,” we shall ask what consequences “the historical sickness” has for the humanities. Can their contemporary crisis in fact be traced back to the crisis of historicism itself?

(SAN5101) – India has its own highly systematized method of scientific discourse that is followed in all scientific texts, called śāstras. Every scientific treatise in the Vedic tradition has a well-defined structure as well as connections among all of its statements to form a coherent discourse that is both concise and precise.

Mastering this method of scientific text authoring greatly simplifies the understanding of Vedic scientific work, thereby accelerating its learning and application. The structures employed in śāstras also provides a common platform for deliberations, discussions, and debates across śāstras, which is one of the most important aspects of the Indic knowledge traditions in their advancement and propagation.

PHS8302 – In the colonial and postcolonial contexts, there have been many attempts both by Indians and western people to situate the darshanic or, loosely translated, the philosophical worldview of Hinduism as science. “Yoga is scientific” or “Vedas are scientific” is a very common refrain that one hears in contentions and discussions today.

This course critically examines if the darshanic or philosophical underpinnings of Hinduism qualify as science or exceed the definition of science by gaining an in depth understanding of science as understood by its philosophers.
