Advaita Vedanta: A Method

HSF6004 – This course will explore and demonstrate the use of the methods (prakriyas) used in the Upanisads to unfold the non-dual vision of reality. This inquiry is designed to facilitate understanding and assimilation of the vision of the Upanisads. And, significantly, to show that due to the nature of the problem it is solving, Advaita Vedanta is a method, not a set of tenets. The soteriological ramifications of this will be explored.

Description

Advaita Vedanta

Learning Outcome:-

  1. Develop a clear understanding of Advaita Vedanta as a method, and the ramifications of that.
  2. Gain a comprehensive understanding of Advaita epistemology and its role as a key to understanding the vision of the Upanisads.
  3. Connect the epistemology to Advaita ontology and the fulfillment of its soteriological end.

In this course, we will examine the methods (prakriyas) used in the Upanisads to reveal the existence and nature of the non-dual reality.  We will begin with a basic discussion of Advaita epistemology to understand the important claim of the Upanisad that it provides, not just information about the non-dual reality, but the means through which one can directly know it.

First, we will undertake a close reading of Sankara’s introduction to the Brahmasutra, and commentary on Taittiriya Upanisad 2.1.1 to establish the core principles of superimposition and negation as well as implicative statements. With these parameters, we will study dialogues in the Mundaka, Taittirya, and Mandukya Upanisads that employ the foundational method of inquiry into cause-effect, and also, the methods of analysis of the levels of our waking experience and analysis of the three states of waking, dream, and sleep.

Throughout, we will be connecting what we discover to the soteriological aim of Advaita Vedanta—release from human suffering and the cycle of birth and death.

Foundation for Holistic Therapeutic Yoga Teaching

According to International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT), Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of yoga practices and teaching. IAYT further says that yoga is a scientific system of self-investigation, self-transformation, and self-realization that originated in India. This course empowers students to learn yoga as a therapeutic practice.

Students will be introduced to the entire toolbox of yoga practices, which can be used to address health conditions and learn how to practice yoga safely when one has chronic conditions. Along with teaching simple but profound aspects such as how to breathe well, how to eat well, and how to manage one’s lifestyle in an optimal manner, this course also offers in-depth techniques of asanas, pranayama, meditation, yoga-philosophy, and concepts to understand the entire landscape of holistic yoga as a Darshana Shastra – a classical tradition of yoga practice.

After completing this course, students will be able to modify their existing yoga practices and techniques to heal several mild chronic conditions such as pain conditions, degenerative disorders, autoimmune disorders, stress-related disorders, and metabolic disorders, among others.  This course is a prerequisite for the Diploma in Yoga Therapy track.

    International Politics: A Vedanta Perspective

CPS7507 – How does a Vedanta perspective widen our understanding of the current predicaments, and help us explore solutions to them? While exploring solutions to international conflicts, the Vedanta perspective goes beyond surface dimensions of conflicts. For example, Vedanta philsopher Sri Aurobindo argued, like individuals, states have egos– amplified through national habits, prejudices, and idiosyncrasies.

When applied to international politics, they lead to jingoism, exploitation, and wars, leading to practices like colonialism and imperialism. Colonialism and imperialism were only manifestations of an exploitative substructure. Though colonialism and imperialism belong to the past, the root, the ego, is intact, and its manifestation has acquired new shapes. The Vedanta perspective would also argue that state ego is not static, and it can evolve when state leaders think in terms of human unity and factor that thinking into policymaking.

The establishment of the United Nations, after the failure of the League of Nations, was hailed a right step in this direction. The UN was established with a promise to ensure dignity and equality to all states. Has this happened? The course explores all these dimensions while mainstreaming the Vedanta perspective and aims to design a Vedanta approach to international politics.

    Historicism and the Humanities

HAM8402 – Historicism may be defined minimally as “the belief that an adequate understanding of the nature of anything and an adequate assessment of its value are to be gained by considering it in terms of the place it occupied and the role it played within a process of development.” On this definition, almost every aspect and every discipline in the humanities has succumbed to historicism. Thus, we have the history of ideas, the history of philosophy, art history, etc.

The study of Hinduism becomes the study of the history of Hinduism: when did it originate, how did it develop from Vedic religion, did it experience a decline, what sociohistorical conditions explain it, and so on. This course interrogates the dominance of historicist concerns in the humanities, with a view to liberating thought from the burden of history.

Guide by Nietzsche’s diagnosis of modern European culture as suffering from a “surfeit of history,” we shall ask what consequences “the historical sickness” has for the humanities. Can their contemporary crisis in fact be traced back to the crisis of historicism itself?

The Humanities and the University – I

Inspired by neo-humanism, the research university was to facilitate self-cultivation, aesthetic appreciation (especially through a knowledge of classical antiquity), and a wider intellectual horizon (through studying history and foreign cultures). Yet, contrary to these lofty ideals, its most enduring legacy has been entrenched class interests, social segregation, Germanism, nationalism, and narrow specialization. In this two-part course, we shall read a selection of founding documents (Humboldt, Paulsen, etc.) with an eye to these problems. We shall also read several critics (Nietzsche, Arendt, Arrowsmith).
