Course Description

The First Quarter of the Beginner Phase of the Certificate Program in Sanskrit Proficiency (SAN0101), develops students without any prior knowledge of Saṃskṛtam, in the skills of listening, reading, and writing Saṃskṛtam in Devanāgarī script. At the end of this course, students will develop the ability to pronounce and write single, combination and conjunct Devanāgarī letters, build basic vocabulary, and recite a few simple Saṃskṛtam verses with the correct pronunciation. This course assumes no prior knowledge of Saṃskṛtam script or language. The medium of instruction is English, and the course is easily accessible to a global audience.

Smt. Parvathi Sriram

Parvathi Sriram is a Physical Therapist by profession and practiced in India prior to moving to Houston. Her area of interests are Sanskrit and Vedanta. She is currently teaching Sanskrit for Arsha Vidya Bhaarati students. She has also been teaching at Balavihar, Chinamya Mission Houston since 2015. Parvathi has been studying Vedanta at Chinmaya Mission Houston since 2014. She also continues her Sanskrit learning at AVB and through Samskrita Bharati.

Course Learning Objectives

In this course the students will be able to:

Locate Vowels and Consonants in Devanāgarī script.
Recognize vowel-consonant combination-alphabets.
Identify combination-letters (samyuktākśarāṇi), letters consisting of vowel and multiple consonants.
Build basic Saṃskṛtam vocabulary.
Practice correct pronunciation of vowels and consonants.

Course content

In this course, students will study the use of the Devanāgarī script, origin of the sounds, pronunciations of vowels, consonants, combination letters and conjunct letters. They will learn the Saṃskṛtam numerals. They will combine letters to form words, and practice writing and reading with correct pronunciation. This course is where the students get acquainted with the building blocks of Saṃskṛtam language, and it will prepare them for their Saṃskṛtam learning.

This course is the part of the program-Certificate Program in Sanskrit Proficiency- Beginner Phase. We strongly recommend registering for the complete program consisting of 4 quarters.

For this course the PDF will be provided as a course material.

Class Structure

There will be a minimum of 1.5 contact hours with one or more faculty every week. The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and learning based on self-study and reflection each week. There will be regular homeworks which will need to be submitted and final quarter end assignment for successful completion of the course.
